Nourish Cookbook Review and Blog Hop

It's nice to be back with another fresh new cookbook to review and this time the focus is on health and flavour with Nourish - Whole food recipes featuring seeds, nuts and beans.

The authors of this new Canadian cookbook, Nettie Cronish and Cara Rosenbloom, bonded over their shared love of combining the nutrients our bodies need for good health with a focus on flavourful cooking. This book makes me think of my mom, bravely delving into the world of vegetarian-focused cooking (including beans, nuts and seeds, of course!) for a family of six in the '80s before this kind of cookbook was available to make the process easy, healthy and tasty. Books like this one take the guesswork out of those sometimes tricky to make dishes that make the body happy.

Along with the diverse selection of 100 recipes, Nourish provides readers with a nice assortment of 'tools' including a Healthy Grocery List with suggested pantry and fridge staples. A How to Buy, Soak and Cook Beans from Scratch with cooking notes on eight different varieties will be helpful for anyone wanting to move away from canned and processed beans to cooking their own at home. The cost savings alone in learning to cook dried beans in this way makes Nourish a must-buy for your cookbook collection, I know I'll use the bean cooking chart in the future.

I selected an entree recipe from Nourish to try - Sesame-Crusted Salmon with Asian Greens and Tamari Dressing, as I thought it would be fun to showcase some sexy wild Pacific salmon from my area of Canada along with some fresh bok choy from my urban garden. Well, funny enough, work took me away from Vancouver Island this month so I had to source the ingredients for the recipe on the fly and cook it in an unfamiliar place - which is really a great test for a recipe, as it throws a few extra twists at ya.

Example of a travel recipe test: Can black sesame seeds be sourced from a local chain grocery store in an unfamiliar town? Sadly no, but I did find chia seeds (still on message with a seeds-focused cookbook) which reproduced some of the crunch and colour contrast, if not that gorgeous black sesame flavour. Most specialty stores do sell black sesame seeds, and I have a huge bag at home so finding them should be pretty easy for you, just not for me on recipe testing day.

I love all the little Tips and Tricks sidebars that run through the cookbook, both recipe-specific and general notes on how to cook better, eat better and live better. I found the tone of the book approachable and non-preachy, with little snippets of helpful information throughout the cookbook encourage making better choices in easy ways.

The sesame-crusted salmon recipe was very easy to execute, surprisingly quick to prepare and very, very tasty. So much so I will certainly make it again, for guests and for myself. I loved the bok choy sauteed with ginger and garlic, and I'm exciting to try this recipe again using Swiss Chard when it is in season.
