Per La Famiglia Cookbook Review and Giveaway

March 22, 2016

It's time for another new Canada-wide simultaneous cookbook review, as myself and food bloggers across the country fill our kitchens with recipes from Per La Famiglia - Memories and Recipes of Southern Italian Home Cooking by Emily Richards.

Once you've read about my experience making Per La Famiglia's Sweet Potato Gnocchi with Sage Butter, be sure to follow the links below to visit other food blogs and check out what everyone else has been making. Oh, and there's a giveaway too! Enter below to win...

Translating from Italian, Per La Famiglia means 'For the Family' and with this in mind, author Emily Richards shares recipes and cooking techniques from her Southern Italy heritage. Focusing on those classic 'Nonna & Nonno' dishes that I've also loved since my own childhood growing up in a Ontario Italian community, this family-friendly book encourages children to help out in the kitchen to keep those Italian traditionals alive and thriving. The extensive Food Glossary of Italian ingredients will help home cooks at every skill level feel comfortable trying these approachable rustic recipes using fresh ingredients.

I particularly enjoyed seeing the Menus for Italian Celebrations, suggesting how to pair different recipes together to create Italian feasts throughout the year. The Christmas Day or Natale menu list is particularly toothsome, bringing together Panchetta & Parmesan Pasta, Roast Pork & Potatoes, Garlicky Green Bean, Mixed Green Salad and Panettone Bread Pudding.

I love the variety of Italian recipes included in this book - with pastas and pizzas made from scratch with scratch-made sauces, main entrees, appetizers and desserts, and an entire chapter devoted to Italian cookies.

The bright and festive photography for Per La Famiglia really makes me want to try out the recipes. I do wish every recipe had a photo, but that's just my own preference and recipes with similar techniques can easily be cross-referenced as I did working in the pasta & gnocchi section.

Each of us Per La Famiglia bloggers across Canada chose a recipe to try out, photograph and share our experiences cooking from the book. I picked Sweet Potato Gnocchi with Sage Butter as I'd never made a gnocchi including sweet potato before and I already like eating every single word in that recipe title.

Making the gnocchi was straightforward and non-intimidating, and before I knew it, pow - I was rolling ridges into fresh gnocchi on my brand new wooden gnocchi board like a champion (an amateur champion who has much to learn, but still!). I did find the gnocchi dough quite wet both times I tried the recipe and had to use additional flour to prevent sticking. I think in future makings I'll wait to peel the potato & sweet potato until after they're boiled to keep excess moisture down.

The classic sage and butter sauce compliments the bright orange gnocchi and I really like that the recipe uses a combination of traditional potato and sweet potato, giving the pasta a different flavour while maintaining that classic fluffy cloud texture.

Go Back

My fav pizza currently is spicy salami with hot peppers

I feel like I've flagged nearly every recipe in this book; however, the gnocchi recipes are really calling to me. I need to get myself a gnocchi board and get cooking!

I like a thick pizza crust and on top lots of cheese onions and pineapple

You totally nailed that gnocchi like a champ! I've never made it because it seems so intimidating but I'm glad you found Emily's recipe easy to follow. Also, thanks for the tips on adding more flour and peeling the potatoes after they've been cooked.

I love penne with alfredo.
